The college is situated in Egra, a town and subdivisional headquarters in the western part of Purba Medinipur. It serves as one of the principal centres of higher education for students from Egra and the surrounding rural blocks, who would otherwise have to travel to larger urban centres such as Kharagpur, Tamluk or Kolkata for undergraduate study.
As a general degree college, Egra Sarada Shashi Bhusan College offers three-year undergraduate programmes leading to bachelor's degrees. Departments typically span the humanities (such as Bengali, English, history, political science, philosophy, geography and education), the sciences (such as physics, chemistry, mathematics and botany or zoology, where offered) and commerce. Admission and examinations are conducted in accordance with the regulations of the affiliating university and the higher education department of the Government of West Bengal.
The college maintains a library, departmental laboratories for science subjects, and facilities for sports and cultural activities. Students participate in the National Service Scheme and in cultural and academic events organised at the college and inter-college level.
The institution plays an important role in expanding access to higher education in the largely agrarian Egra subdivision, and contributes to the wider network of state-aided general degree colleges that has historically been central to undergraduate education in West Bengal.
