The Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) is an integrated steel manufacturing facility located in Durgapur, in the Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal, India. It is one of the integrated steel plants operated by the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Steel, Government of India. The plant was set up in collaboration with the United Kingdom and forms part of the early industrial expansion undertaken by India during the Second Five Year Plan.

In the 1950s, the Government of India initiated the construction of three integrated steel plants in the public sector at Bhilai, Rourkela and Durgapur, each with foreign technical collaboration. While Bhilai was set up with Soviet assistance and Rourkela with West German assistance, Durgapur Steel Plant was established with the technical collaboration of the United Kingdom. The plant was conceived as a key element of India's industrialisation strategy and the development of an indigenous heavy industry base.
The plant was initially run by Hindustan Steel Limited, the predecessor entity that managed the public sector steel plants before being reorganised under SAIL in the 1970s.
Durgapur Steel Plant is situated along the Damodar river belt in West Bengal, in a region historically associated with coal mining and heavy industry. Its location was chosen for proximity to coking coal from the Raniganj and Jharia coalfields, iron ore sources in eastern India, and rail and water connectivity. The plant is closely associated with the planned industrial township of Durgapur, which grew substantially around it during the late 1950s and 1960s.
As an integrated steel plant, DSP carries out the full production cycle from raw materials to finished steel, including coke ovens, blast furnaces, steel making, and rolling mills. The product portfolio has historically included merchant products and structural steel, and the plant has been associated with the production of railway-related steel items, including wheels and axles, through allied facilities at Durgapur.
The plant has undergone phases of modernisation under SAIL to upgrade older units, improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions and shift production towards higher-value steel grades. Modernisation programmes have included upgrades to the blast furnace, steel melting shop and rolling mill facilities.
Durgapur Steel Plant is significant as one of the foundational integrated steel plants of independent India and as a major driver of industrial development in eastern India. Together with the township of Durgapur, it played an important role in transforming the surrounding region into one of the principal industrial belts of West Bengal. The plant remains a major employer and a strategic component of the Indian public sector steel industry.
