Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth

Overview

Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth (BSKKV) is a state public agricultural university located at Dapoli in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, India. It serves the Konkan region, a narrow coastal belt along the Arabian Sea characterised by heavy monsoon rainfall, lateritic soils, and horticultural cropping systems dominated by mango, cashew, coconut, and rice. The university is one of the four state agricultural universities of Maharashtra and is responsible for agricultural education, research, and extension activities across the Konkan agro-climatic zone.

Background

The Konkan region presents a distinctive set of agricultural challenges, including high rainfall concentrated in a few monsoon months, hilly terrain, soil erosion, and a strong dependence on plantation horticulture and fisheries-linked livelihoods. To address these region-specific needs, the Government of Maharashtra established a dedicated agricultural university for the Konkan, separate from the universities serving the Vidarbha, Marathwada, and western Maharashtra regions. The university was later renamed in honour of Dr. Balasaheb Sawant, a noted figure associated with agricultural development in Maharashtra.

Academics and faculties

The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes through constituent colleges and research stations distributed across the Konkan districts. Major areas of teaching and research include:

  • Agriculture, with emphasis on rice and pulses suited to high-rainfall conditions
  • Horticulture, particularly Alphonso mango, cashew, coconut, areca nut, kokum, and jackfruit
  • Agricultural engineering and post-harvest technology
  • Forestry and agroforestry suited to the Western Ghats
  • Fisheries science, reflecting the long coastline of the region
  • Agricultural biotechnology and plant breeding

Research and extension

BSKKV operates a network of regional research stations, krishi vigyan kendras (KVKs), and zonal agricultural research stations that develop and disseminate technologies for Konkan farmers. The university is widely recognised for its work on improved varieties and management practices in mango and cashew, lateritic soil management, monsoon paddy systems, and post-harvest handling of perishable horticultural produce. Extension activities include farmer training, demonstrations, and advisory services coordinated with the state agriculture department.

Significance

As the principal agricultural research and education institution for the Konkan, BSKKV plays a central role in supporting the region's farm economy, which is dominated by smallholders cultivating high-value horticultural crops. Its varietal releases and agronomic recommendations have influenced cultivation practices for Alphonso mango and cashew, two crops of considerable commercial importance to Maharashtra's exports and rural incomes.
