The new university was carved out to address regional demand for postgraduate education, research, and academic administration closer to the student population of Srikakulam district.
The university offers postgraduate programmes across the arts, sciences, commerce, management and social sciences, along with research programmes leading to MPhil and PhD degrees. It functions both as a teaching campus through its constituent departments and as an affiliating body for degree colleges within its territorial jurisdiction.
Government, aided and private degree colleges in Srikakulam district fall under the affiliating jurisdiction of the university. These institutions follow the curriculum, examinations and academic calendar prescribed by the university.
The main campus is located in Srikakulam, the headquarters of Srikakulam district in northern coastal Andhra Pradesh. The region lies along the Bay of Bengal and is connected by National Highway 16 and the Howrah–Chennai railway corridor.
As one of the newer state universities in Andhra Pradesh, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University, Srikakulam plays a role in decentralising higher education in the state. Its naming after Ambedkar reflects the broader public commemoration of his contribution to social justice, constitutional law and the upliftment of marginalised communities in India.
