The university was established by the Government of Uttar Pradesh through an Act of the State Legislature to coordinate and regulate technical education in the state. It functions as an affiliating university, conducting examinations and prescribing curricula for a large number of self-financed and government-aided technical colleges. The university's administrative headquarters are in Lucknow.
Originally founded as Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU), the institution was later renamed Gautam Buddh Technical University (GBTU) following an administrative reorganisation that briefly created a separate Mahamaya Technical University (MTU) for the western region of the state. The two universities were subsequently merged back into a single entity, which was eventually renamed in honour of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.
AKTU offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes through its affiliated institutions and its own Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) and other constituent units. Programmes include the Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech), Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch), Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Computer Applications (MCA), Master of Technology (M.Tech), and doctoral (Ph.D.) research programmes.
Admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes are conducted primarily through state-level entrance examinations and national-level engineering entrance tests, while management and pharmacy admissions follow corresponding state and national tests.
The university affiliates a large number of technical colleges across Uttar Pradesh, making it one of the most extensive affiliating universities in the country in terms of student enrolment. These include institutions offering engineering, management, pharmacy, architecture, and applied sciences.
AKTU plays a central role in shaping the technical education landscape of Uttar Pradesh by standardising curricula, conducting examinations, and granting degrees for a vast student population. Its naming after Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam reflects both his scientific legacy and his close association with promoting technical education and youth empowerment in India.
