Divya Kakran hails from Purbaliyan village in the Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh. She was introduced to wrestling at a young age within a family that had a tradition of dangal (traditional Indian wrestling) competition. Her early training took place at akharas in and around Delhi and western Uttar Pradesh, and she competed in numerous traditional dangals before transitioning to mat wrestling on the international circuit.
Kakran built her reputation through performances at national-level cadet and junior competitions and at the Asian Junior and Cadet Wrestling Championships, where she earned medals in her weight category. Her base of strength wrestling, developed through dangal participation, was credited with shaping her aggressive style on the mat.
At the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Australia, Kakran won a bronze medal in the women's freestyle 68 kg event, contributing to India's wrestling medal tally at the Games.
At the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Kakran won a bronze medal in the women's 68 kg freestyle category, becoming one of the Indian women wrestlers to win an Asian Games medal in that edition.
Kakran has been a regular medallist at the Asian Wrestling Championships across editions, winning a gold medal in the 68 kg category at the 2021 Asian Wrestling Championships held in Almaty, Kazakhstan. She has additionally collected bronze medals at multiple earlier and later editions of the continental championships.
She has won medals at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships, including gold in her weight class at editions held during the late 2010s.
Kakran is considered part of the generation of Indian women wrestlers who emerged after the success of the Phogat sisters and Sakshi Malik, broadening India's medal prospects across heavier women's freestyle categories. Her transition from village dangal circuits to international mats has been highlighted as an example of grassroots-level wrestling traditions in western Uttar Pradesh feeding into the national team.
Kakran has received state-level honours from the Government of Uttar Pradesh in recognition of her achievements at international competitions, along with monetary rewards customary for medallists at the Commonwealth and Asian Games.
