Dipika Kakar was born in Pune, Maharashtra, and spent part of her early life in Mumbai. Before entering the entertainment industry, she worked briefly as a flight attendant. She made her transition to acting in Hindi television in the late 2000s, taking up supporting roles before securing lead parts.
Kakar began her on-screen career with appearances in serials such as Neer Bhare Tere Naina Devi on Colors TV and Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo on Zee TV, which provided her early exposure on Indian general-entertainment channels.
Her breakthrough came in 2011 when she was cast as Simar Bharadwaj in Sasural Simar Ka, produced by Rashmi Sharma Telefilms for Colors TV. The serial ran for several years and became one of the channel's longer-running daily soaps. Kakar's portrayal of the elder daughter-in-law of the Bharadwaj household established her as a recognised face on prime-time Hindi television and earned her several nominations and awards at industry ceremonies, including recognitions at the Indian Telly Awards and Colors-affiliated honours.
In 2018, Kakar entered the twelfth season of the reality show Bigg Boss, hosted by Salman Khan and broadcast on Colors TV. She was declared the winner of the season, becoming one of the contestants from the television acting fraternity to claim the title.
Following Bigg Boss, she appeared in dance-based reality programming and returned to fiction television with Kahaan Hum Kahaan Tum on Star Plus, in which she played Dr. Sonakshi Rastogi, a doctor who is also a television actress. The role marked a shift from her earlier saas-bahu-style image and was received favourably by viewers and critics. She has also been active on digital platforms, sharing lifestyle and family content with a substantial online following.
Kakar was previously married to Raunak Samson; the marriage ended in divorce. She married actor Shoaib Ibrahim, her co-star from Sasural Simar Ka, in February 2018. She subsequently embraced Islam and is sometimes credited as Dipika Kakar Ibrahim. The couple's first child, a son, was born in 2023. The family is based in Mumbai.
Kakar is regarded as a representative figure of the 2010s Hindi daily-soap era, when long-running family dramas dominated Indian general-entertainment television. Her transition from a fiction-show lead to a reality-show winner, and her active presence on social media and YouTube, illustrate the broader career pattern of contemporary Indian television actors who diversify across formats and digital platforms.
