Dileep was born in Eloor, near Aluva in Ernakulam district, Kerala. He started his career as a mimicry artiste with the troupe Kalabhavan, where he trained alongside several performers who later became prominent figures in Malayalam cinema, including Jayaram, Nadirshah and Salim Kumar. His early stage work in mimicry and skits shaped the comic sensibility that defined much of his subsequent screen career.
Dileep entered cinema in the early 1990s in minor roles and as a dubbing artiste. He gained visibility through small comedy parts before transitioning to lead roles in the latter half of the decade. His comic persona, often built around middle-class characters and situational humour, found a wide audience in Kerala.
The films of the late 1990s and early 2000s established him as a bankable lead in family entertainers and comedy films. He worked frequently with directors associated with mainstream Malayalam comedy, and his collaborations with writer-director duos producing situational comedies were commercially successful. Over the years he also took on dramatic and character-driven roles, expanding his range beyond comedy.
Dileep set up his own production banner and has produced and distributed several Malayalam films. He is also associated with theatre exhibition in Kerala, including a multi-screen complex in Chalakudy in Thrissur district. He has additionally invested in event and entertainment ventures and has been involved with the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) over different periods.
Apart from acting, Dileep has appeared as a host and judge on Malayalam television, and has lent his voice to dubbing assignments. He has also been involved in stage shows and charity events tied to the Malayalam film fraternity.
Dileep was earlier married to actor Manju Warrier, with whom he has a daughter, Meenakshi. The couple separated and were later divorced. He subsequently married actor Kavya Madhavan; the couple has a daughter.
Within Malayalam cinema, Dileep is significant as a performer who carried mainstream comedy films through a long stretch of the 2000s, a period when the industry was navigating shifts in audience preferences and the rise of multiplex distribution. His work helped sustain the family-audience comedy genre in Kerala, and his parallel activities as producer, distributor and exhibitor make him part of a small group of Malayalam actors with substantial business interests across the film value chain.
