History

Dhenkanal was the capital of the princely state of Dhenkanal, one of the Garhjat or feudatory states of Odisha under British paramountcy. The state was ruled by a line of chiefs styled Raja, and traditional accounts trace its founding to a chief named Dhenka, after whom the town is said to be named. After Indian independence, the ruler signed the instrument of accession and the state was merged into the province of Odisha on 1 January 1948, along with the other Eastern States. Following administrative reorganisation, the present Dhenkanal district was carved out from the larger former area, with the town continuing as its headquarters.

The town lies in the central plateau and valley region of Odisha, with the Brahmani river flowing through the wider district. The terrain around Dhenkanal is characterised by low hills, forested tracts and agricultural plains. It is connected by National Highway 55 (Cuttack–Sambalpur) and by the Howrah–Chennai main line of the East Coast Railway, with Dhenkanal railway station being a major stop.
