DPSRU was established by the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi by upgrading the erstwhile Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research (DIPSAR), which had a long-standing reputation as a leading pharmacy institution in northern India. By converting DIPSAR into a full university, the Delhi government created a specialised institution focused exclusively on pharmaceutical education and research, the first of its kind in the country.
DIPSAR continues to function as a constituent institution of the university, alongside newer schools and centres set up under the DPSRU framework. The university campus is situated at Pushp Vihar in South Delhi.
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in pharmacy and related areas. Its academic activities span:
DPSRU houses schools and centres dealing with pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacy management, physiotherapy, and translational research, and conducts industry-oriented training programmes in addition to its degree courses.
As India's first university devoted entirely to pharmacy, DPSRU plays a notable role in shaping specialised human resources for the pharmaceutical industry, regulatory bodies, hospitals and academic institutions. Its location in the national capital and its lineage from DIPSAR give it a prominent position in pharmacy education in India.
