The university was established as the University of Gorakhpur to cater to the higher education needs of the Gorakhpur division and surrounding regions of Purvanchal. It was later renamed in honour of Deen Dayal Upadhyay, the political thinker associated with the philosophy of Integral Humanism. The campus is situated in the city of Gorakhpur, a major urban centre in eastern Uttar Pradesh that lies near the foothills of the Himalayas and close to the Indo-Nepal border.
