Mohanty was a long-serving member of the Odisha Ranji Trophy team and one of its leading wicket-takers in first-class cricket. He played in the major domestic tournaments organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), including the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy and Deodhar Trophy.
He made his debut for India in the late 1990s and featured in Test matches as well as One Day Internationals. His distinctive open-chested action and ability to move the ball away from right-handers made him an asset in limited-overs cricket. He was part of India's squad for the 1999 Cricket World Cup held in England.
After retiring from active cricket, Mohanty took up coaching and selection-related roles within Indian cricket. He has been associated with the BCCI as a national selector and has worked in cricket development at the state level in Odisha.
Mohanty is regarded as one of the most prominent cricketers produced by Odisha and is often cited as a pioneering figure in raising the profile of cricket in the state. His international appearances helped bring greater attention to talent emerging from eastern India.
