Martyn was primarily a right-handed batsman who batted in the middle order. His technique was widely regarded as classical, and he was particularly noted for elegant strokeplay square of the wicket on the off-side and through the covers. In addition to his batting, he was an occasional right-arm medium-pace bowler. Martyn was also a distinguished fieldsman, stationed primarily in the covers, where he was known for his ability to set up and execute spectacular run-outs. On rare occasions, he also kept wicket at first-class level.
Martyn made his initial appearances for the Australian national team between 1992 and 1994, but featured only sporadically during this period.
From 2000 onwards, Martyn established himself as a regular member of the Australian Test and ODI sides, retaining his place until his retirement in late 2006.
Martyn's contribution to Australian cricket spanned one of the most successful eras in the country's cricketing history. His role in back-to-back World Cup victories, the Champions Trophy triumph, and the landmark 2004 series win in India underlines his importance to the Australian middle order during the early 2000s. The recognition of his form with the Allan Border Medal's Test Player of the Year award in 2005 reflects the consistency he achieved at the highest level.
