The name Dabur is derived from the Hindi words Daktar (doctor) and Burman, in reference to its founder Dr. S. K. Burman, a physician who began preparing Ayurvedic medicines in Kolkata in the late nineteenth century to treat diseases such as cholera and malaria that were prevalent in Bengal at the time. The company grew from a small dispensary into a household name in Indian Ayurveda and natural products.
Dabur's portfolio spans health care, personal care, home care and food. Major brands associated with the company include:
Dabur operates manufacturing facilities at several locations across India, including in Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and other states, along with international units serving markets in West Asia, Africa, Europe and North America. Through its subsidiaries, the group markets products in a large number of countries outside India.
As one of the oldest surviving Indian companies, Dabur is regarded as a key player in popularising Ayurveda as a modern consumer category. Its longevity, family-led ownership combined with professional management, and integration of traditional formulations with industrial-scale production make it a frequent subject of business history and case studies on Indian enterprise.
