Overview

d2h is an Indian Direct-To-Home (DTH) satellite pay television broadcasting service. It delivers digital television, audio and value-added services to subscribers across India through satellite transmission, and competes in the Indian DTH market alongside operators such as Tata Play, Airtel Digital TV, Sun Direct and the public broadcaster's free-to-air service.

Key facts

Service name d2h
Industry Direct-To-Home satellite television
Country of operation India
Type Pay TV broadcasting service
Parent Dish TV India Limited (following merger with Videocon d2h)

Background

The service was originally launched as Videocon d2h, the DTH arm of the Videocon group, and entered the Indian satellite television market as a later entrant compared to incumbents such as Dish TV and Tata Sky. It offered a range of subscription packages, high-definition channels and interactive services, and marketed set-top boxes branded under the d2h name.

Merger with Dish TV

Videocon d2h was merged with Dish TV India Limited to create a combined DTH operator, which became one of the largest pay-TV platforms in India by subscriber base. Following the merger, the d2h brand continued as a service offering under the unified company, with Dish TV operating both brands in parallel for distinct subscriber segments.

Services

  • Standard-definition and high-definition television channels across genres, including news, entertainment, sports, movies, music and regional programming.
  • Multiple regional language packs catering to subscribers across Indian states.
  • Set-top boxes with features such as electronic programme guides, recording capability on selected models, and on-screen menus.
  • Value-added services including active learning, music and devotional content.

Significance

As one of the surviving national DTH brands, d2h forms part of the regulated pay-TV ecosystem in India overseen by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Its merger into Dish TV reflected the consolidation phase of the Indian DTH industry, which has faced rising competition from broadband-based streaming and over-the-top (OTT) platforms.
