City Union Bank traces its origins to the early twentieth century, when several small banks were established in the Kumbakonam region to serve local trade, agriculture and the temple-town economy of the Cauvery delta. The institution evolved through subsequent decades, broadening its customer base from a regional clientele to a wider commercial banking franchise. It functions under the regulatory supervision of the Reserve Bank of India.
The bank's core business comprises deposit mobilisation, retail lending, loans to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), agricultural and gold-secured loans, and corporate credit. It also provides ancillary services such as remittances, third-party insurance and mutual fund distribution, internet and mobile banking, and card products. The MSME and gold-loan segments have historically formed an important part of its loan book, reflecting the bank's roots in southern India's trading and agrarian economy.
Branches and ATMs are concentrated in Tamil Nadu, with additional outlets across other Indian states. The bank's expansion has emphasised semi-urban and urban centres in southern India.
City Union Bank is regarded as one of the long-standing community-rooted private banks in Tamil Nadu and is closely associated with Kumbakonam, a town historically known for its concentration of indigenous banking activity. Within the Indian banking landscape it is grouped among the older private sector banks that pre-date the era of liberalisation-driven new private banks of the 1990s.
