Green was first elected as the MP for Bolton West at the 2015 general election. He retained the seat at the 2017 general election and again at the 2019 general election, increasing both his majority and his vote share on each occasion.
In August 2019, he was appointed as a Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) in the Department for Education. Following the December 2019 general election, he was appointed as PPS to Baroness Evans of Bowes Park, who was then serving as Leader of the House of Lords and Lord Privy Seal.
On 13 October 2020, Green stepped down from his position as PPS, citing his disagreement with the United Kingdom government's approach to coronavirus restrictions. He subsequently served as a steering committee member of the COVID Recovery Group, a lockdown-sceptic grouping of Conservative MPs that opposed the UK government's lockdown introduced in December 2020.
At the 2024 general election, Green lost the Bolton West seat to the Labour Party. In December 2025, he defected from the Conservative Party to Reform UK.
