Choolaimedu lies inland in central Chennai, away from the coast. It is administered as part of the Greater Chennai Corporation and falls within the Chennai Central parliamentary constituency area. Choolaimedu High Road is the principal arterial street running through the locality, connecting it with Nungambakkam and Kodambakkam, and is lined with shops, eateries, banks and small commercial establishments.
The area is largely middle-class and densely built up, with a mix of older independent houses, apartment blocks and small commercial buildings. It has a multi-religious population, and the neighbourhood is home to several places of worship, including Hindu temples, churches and mosques. Tamil is the dominant language, with significant numbers of Telugu, Urdu and Malayalam speakers.
Choolaimedu is served by the Chennai suburban bus network operated by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation. The nearest suburban railway stations on the Chennai Beach–Chennai Central–Tiruvallur and Chennai MRTS networks are at Kodambakkam and Nungambakkam, both within easy reach. The locality is also accessible from stations on the Chennai Metro Rail green and blue lines that pass through nearby Vadapalani and Nungambakkam.
Choolaimedu functions primarily as a residential area with strong neighbourhood retail. Choolaimedu High Road and the lanes branching from it host bakeries, restaurants, jewellery shops, textile outlets, electronics stores and clinics. The neighbourhood's proximity to Nungambakkam and Kodambakkam, both major commercial and media centres of Chennai, has supported steady growth in real estate and small business activity.
The locality and its immediate vicinity contain a number of schools and colleges catering to central Chennai. Several Tamil Nadu State Board and CBSE-affiliated schools operate in the neighbourhood, and higher-education institutions in adjoining Nungambakkam and Vadapalani are easily accessible to residents.
As one of the older inner suburbs of Chennai, Choolaimedu illustrates the gradual westward expansion of the city beyond the colonial-era core. Its dense mix of housing, small industry and commerce makes it a typical example of a central Chennai residential pocket that has urbanised steadily through the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
