Chhatarpur is named after Chhatrasal, the Bundela Rajput ruler who established an independent kingdom in Bundelkhand during the seventeenth century. The town developed as a princely seat under successor rulers and later became part of the Bundelkhand Agency under the British. After the integration of princely states following Indian independence, Chhatarpur was reorganised into the modern district structure of Madhya Pradesh.
The city lies on the northern part of the Madhya Pradesh plateau, in a region marked by undulating terrain, granite outcrops and seasonal streams typical of Bundelkhand. The climate is broadly subtropical, with hot summers, a monsoon season from June to September, and cool, dry winters. Agriculture in the surrounding district relies heavily on the monsoon, with wheat, pulses, oilseeds and coarse grains among the main crops.
As the district headquarters, Chhatarpur hosts the offices of the District Collector, the Superintendent of Police, the District and Sessions Court, and other administrative and revenue departments. Civic services within the city are managed by a municipal council. The city falls within the Chhatarpur Lok Sabha constituency for elections to the Indian Parliament and is part of the Chhatarpur assembly constituency for the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
The local economy is largely service- and trade-oriented, supporting the agricultural hinterland of the district. Wholesale and retail trade in grains, pulses and oilseeds, small-scale manufacturing, education, public administration and tourism-linked services constitute the major sources of employment. The proximity to Khajuraho contributes indirectly to hospitality and transport activity in the area.
Chhatarpur is connected by road to other cities in Bundelkhand and to neighbouring districts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh through national and state highways. The town has a railway station on the Indian Railways network linking it with Khajuraho and other regional centres. The nearest major airport is Khajuraho Airport, which offers domestic flights connecting the region to metropolitan cities.
The town and its surrounding district reflect the cultural traditions of Bundelkhand, including Bundeli folk music, dance and cuisine. Chhatarpur is commonly used as a base for visiting the temple complex at Khajuraho, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its medieval Chandela-era temples. Other heritage and natural sites in the district include forts, palaces and waterfalls associated with the Bundela period and the surrounding plateau landscape.
