The university was established to address the needs of agricultural education, research, and extension in the agrarian belt of Haryana, a state where farming is a major occupation and contributor to the economy. It functions on the model of land-grant style agricultural universities developed in India after independence, integrating teaching with applied research and outreach to farming communities.
The campus is situated in Hisar, a city in the western part of Haryana that lies in a semi-arid agricultural region. The location supports work on crops, livestock, and farming systems suited to the climatic and soil conditions of the surrounding districts.
CCS HAU offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across disciplines such as agriculture, animal sciences, agricultural engineering, home science, and basic sciences related to agriculture. Research at the university covers areas including crop improvement, plant protection, soil science, water management, agricultural extension, and farm mechanisation.
The university operates a network of research stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) across Haryana to conduct location-specific research and disseminate improved practices and technologies to farmers. Released crop varieties and farm advisories developed at the university have contributed to agricultural productivity in the region.
As the principal agricultural university of Haryana, CCS HAU plays a central role in human resource development for the state's agriculture sector, in supporting public extension services, and in advising state agencies on policy and technical matters relating to farming. It is regarded as one of the leading institutions of its kind in India.
