C-DIT was set up to bring together expertise in imaging science, electronics and communications, and to apply such expertise to socially relevant projects. Over time, the centre's mandate expanded beyond imaging research to include training programmes, content development for educational and developmental communication, and the implementation of information technology and e-governance projects on behalf of the Government of Kerala.
C-DIT's work spans several broad areas:
C-DIT conducts professional training courses in disciplines connected with media, communication and information technology. These programmes are aimed at equipping students and working professionals with skills in areas such as digital film-making, multimedia production, animation and applied communication. Because of this teaching role, the institution is sometimes described in catalogues as a college based in Kerala.
As one of the technical and creative arms of the Kerala state government, C-DIT plays a role in bridging research in imaging and communication with public service delivery. Its work in producing developmental media content, supporting e-governance initiatives, and offering specialised training contributes to Kerala's broader engagement with information technology and digital media.
