Following the recommendations of the Indian government to expand higher education and improve regional access to central universities, Parliament enacted the Central Universities Act, 2009. The Act established a series of central universities, with one each in states that did not previously have a central university. The Central University of Kerala was constituted under this legislation, becoming the first central university in the state.
The university is funded by the Government of India through the University Grants Commission and operates as an autonomous institution governed by its own statutes, ordinances, and regulations framed under the Act. Its administrative structure includes a Visitor (the President of India), a Chancellor, and a Vice-Chancellor who serves as the principal academic and executive officer.
The university is located in Kasaragod district in northern Kerala, a region close to the Karnataka border. The campus has been developed at Periye and surrounding sites, with academic, administrative, and residential facilities. Kasaragod is a linguistically diverse area where Malayalam, Kannada, Tulu, and Konkani are spoken, providing the university with a culturally varied catchment.
The Central University of Kerala organises its teaching and research through schools and departments covering a range of disciplines. Areas of study typically include:
The university offers master's degrees, integrated five-year programmes, M.Phil. and Ph.D. research degrees, and certificate or diploma courses in select areas. Admissions to most programmes are conducted through national-level entrance examinations administered by central testing agencies.
As a central university, CUK is governed by statutory bodies prescribed under the Central Universities Act, 2009. These include:
The establishment of the Central University of Kerala marked the entry of a Government of India–funded central university into Kerala's higher education landscape, which had previously been served primarily by state universities such as the University of Kerala, the University of Calicut, and Mahatma Gandhi University. CUK contributes to research output, postgraduate training, and academic exchange in the region, and it draws students from across India under the central admissions framework.
