The Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE), located in Mumbai, is a Deemed to be University and an institution of higher learning dedicated to fisheries science in India. It functions as a premier centre for education, research and training in the fisheries sector.
CIFE is one of four deemed to be universities operating under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The other three institutions with this status under ICAR are the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) and the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI).
The institute operates a network of five regional centres across the country, extending its academic and research activities beyond its Mumbai headquarters. These centres are located at Rohtak in Haryana, Kolkata in West Bengal, Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh, Pawarkheda in Madhya Pradesh, and Motihari in Bihar. Through this network, CIFE addresses fisheries-related concerns across diverse agro-climatic and aquatic environments, including freshwater, brackish-water and coastal systems.
In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024, CIFE was ranked 9th in India in the agriculture and allied sectors category, reflecting its standing among institutions in this field.
