CIET undertakes the design, production and distribution of audio, video, multimedia and digital learning materials for school education and teacher education. It supports the policy goals of NCERT and the Ministry of Education by providing technology-enabled content and platforms for learners, teachers and teacher educators.
CIET was established as a constituent unit of NCERT to consolidate work on educational media and technology that had earlier been carried out through separate units within NCERT, including the Centre for Educational Technology and the Department of Teaching Aids. The institute brought together the functions of media production, research in educational technology, and training under one umbrella, with a mandate to use mass media for improving the reach and quality of school education.
CIET has been associated with the development and management of national digital platforms for school education, including repositories of e-textbooks, supplementary learning materials and content for teachers. It contributes to initiatives promoting open educational resources and ICT-enabled learning in line with national policies on education and digital learning.
As the technology arm of NCERT, CIET plays a central role in shaping the use of media and digital tools in Indian school education. Its work supports curriculum implementation, teacher professional development and equitable access to learning materials, particularly through broadcast and online channels that can reach learners across diverse regions and languages.
