Ferguson began his first-class career in the 2004–05 season with South Australia, the side he would represent for the entirety of his domestic career, a span of more than fourteen seasons. He was a consistent presence in Australian domestic cricket and built his reputation primarily as a middle-order batsman in the limited-overs game.
By 2009, Ferguson's form in limited-overs cricket earned him selection in the Australian national side, where he was viewed as a useful addition to the middle order in One Day Internationals (ODIs). His progress was interrupted by a knee injury sustained during the final of the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy, which kept him out of competitive cricket for eleven months. Following the injury he lost his place in the national side and played few ODIs subsequently.
He returned to the Test side for a single match in 2016 against South Africa, scoring a combined total of 4 runs across his two innings. He has represented Australia in all three international formats over the course of his career.
When the Big Bash League was launched, Ferguson initially turned out for the Adelaide Strikers. From the 2014–15 season he played three seasons with the Melbourne Renegades, before joining the Sydney Thunder, whom he later captained. During BBL 2019 he scored an unbeaten 113, the highest individual score in that edition of the tournament.
In the Indian Premier League, Ferguson spent two seasons with the Pune Warriors India franchise.
During the 2020–21 Sheffield Shield season, Ferguson announced his retirement from first-class cricket. He acknowledged that being left out of the first match of the season had hastened his decision, remarking that the omission had "knocked a bit of the wind out of my sails". On 7 February 2021, he was informed that the Sydney Thunder would not offer him a contract for the 2021–22 Big Bash season, despite his having captained the franchise in the previous two seasons.
Following his retirement from playing, Ferguson moved into broadcasting and works as a cricket commentator for Triple M, the Seven Network and the Nine Network in Australia.
Ferguson is remembered as a dependable middle-order batsman who served South Australia for over a decade and contributed to Australia's limited-overs side at the end of the 2000s. His career also reflects the trajectory of several Australian domestic players whose international prospects were affected by injury, and who later found extended roles in the Twenty20 franchise circuit.
