CP Joshi

Overview

C. P. Joshi (born 29 July 1950) is an Indian politician affiliated with the Indian National Congress. Born into a Brahmin family in Nathdwara, Rajasthan, he has been elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Nathdwara constituency on five occasions.

Joshi served as a Cabinet Minister in the Government of Rajasthan between 1998 and 2003. He later entered national politics, representing the Bhilwara constituency in the 15th Lok Sabha. He was among the first nineteen members sworn in to the Union Cabinet on 22 May 2009, despite being a first-time Lok Sabha member.

During his tenure in the second Manmohan Singh ministry, Joshi held the portfolios of Road Transport and Highways, and Rural Development and Panchayati Raj. He subsequently served as the Speaker of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly. In a later assembly election, he lost the Nathdwara seat to Vishvaraj Singh Mewar, a descendant of the Maharana Pratap family.
