The CEAT brand traces its origins to Italy, where it was established as Cavi Elettrici e Affini Torino, a manufacturer of electric cables and related products that subsequently moved into tyres. The Indian operations began in 1958 with the incorporation of CEAT Tyres of India Limited in collaboration with the Italian parent. Manufacturing of tyres at the company's Bhandup plant in Mumbai commenced shortly thereafter.
In 1982, the RPG Group, led by industrialist R. P. Goenka, acquired the company. It was later renamed CEAT Limited in 1990, reflecting its diversified product portfolio.
CEAT manufactures a wide range of tyres serving original equipment manufacturers and the replacement market. Its product segments include:
The company supplies tyres to major Indian and global vehicle manufacturers and operates a dealer and retail network across India, including branded outlets known as CEAT Shoppe.
CEAT Limited is a flagship company of the RPG Group, the diversified Indian conglomerate founded by R. P. Goenka. The company is publicly listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India. Harsh Goenka has long been associated with the company as chairman, while the day-to-day management has been led by professional executives appointed by the board.
CEAT has had a long association with cricket through the CEAT Cricket Rating awards, which recognise outstanding performances by international cricketers. The company has also been a sponsor of various domestic and international cricket properties, including title sponsorships of strategic time-outs in the Indian Premier League.
As one of the older established tyre manufacturers in India, CEAT has played a significant role in the development of the Indian tyre industry alongside peers such as MRF, Apollo Tyres, and JK Tyre. Its long-standing presence in both the original equipment and replacement markets, together with its export operations, makes it a notable player in the country's automotive components sector.
