Blue Dart Aviation was established to provide dedicated freighter capacity for the time-definite delivery network of Blue Dart Express. Unlike passenger carriers that handle cargo as belly freight, Blue Dart Aviation operates an all-cargo fleet on a hub-and-spoke pattern, with most flights running at night to enable next-business-day deliveries across major Indian cities.
Blue Dart Express was founded in 1983 as a domestic courier and express company. To overcome the constraints of relying on commercial passenger flights for cargo movement, the group set up an in-house aviation arm. Blue Dart Aviation became the first domestic cargo airline in India dedicated to the express industry, allowing the parent company to guarantee overnight delivery commitments between metros and tier-II cities.
In 2005, the German logistics group Deutsche Post World Net (now Deutsche Post DHL) acquired a majority stake in Blue Dart Express, integrating Blue Dart Aviation into the wider DHL global network for the Indian market.
Blue Dart Aviation operates scheduled freighter services connecting major Indian metros, including Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Hyderabad, with onward distribution by road through the Blue Dart Express ground network. The airline has historically operated narrow-body Boeing freighters such as the Boeing 757-200 freighter, which forms the core of its fleet.
Operating bases and engineering facilities are located primarily at Chennai International Airport, where the company also undertakes maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) activities for its fleet.
As the only domestic Indian carrier dedicated wholly to express air cargo for much of its history, Blue Dart Aviation has played a notable role in the development of organised time-bound logistics in India. It enabled the rise of overnight delivery products in domestic e-commerce, banking documents, pharmaceuticals and high-value shipments, and contributed to the establishment of dedicated cargo terminals at Indian airports.
