Birmitrapur is a town historically associated with limestone and dolomite mining, and the railway connection to the area has long been linked to the movement of mineral freight to industrial centres, particularly the Rourkela Steel Plant. The station functions as the terminal point of the branch line that connects Birmitrapur with Rourkela Junction, an important hub on the Howrah–Mumbai main line.
The station provides rail access to Birmitrapur town, situated near the Odisha–Jharkhand border. The branch line links the town with Rourkela Junction, from where onward connections to the rest of the Indian Railways network are available. Road links connect Birmitrapur to Rourkela and other parts of Sundargarh district.
The Birmitrapur–Rourkela line has historically supported the transport of limestone and other minerals from the Birmitrapur area to steel and cement industries. Passenger services on the branch have provided commuter access between Birmitrapur and Rourkela.
