Bina Junction lies in the town of Bina-Etawa in the northern part of Sagar district. The station is situated on the trunk corridor connecting Delhi with Bhopal, Itarsi and onward to southern India, and serves as the junction from which the line eastward to Katni branches off. From Bina, lines extend in multiple directions:
The station originated during the expansion of railways in central India under the British colonial era, when the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR) developed the route linking Bombay with Allahabad and Jabalpur. Bina developed as a junction because the Bina–Katni branch met the main north–south corridor here, giving the small settlement the role of a railway town. After Indian independence and the reorganisation of zones, the station came under the Central Railway, and following the creation of new zones in 2003 it was placed under the West Central Railway zone, with administrative oversight from the Bhopal division.
The station has multiple platforms handling long-distance mail and express trains, passenger trains, and a substantial volume of goods traffic. The route through Bina is fully electrified, and the station houses an electric loco shed (Bina ELS), one of the prominent locomotive sheds of Indian Railways, which maintains a fleet of electric locomotives used on freight and passenger services across the region. A diesel loco shed has also historically operated in the vicinity.
Bina Junction is significant for several reasons:
