Background

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is a flagship project of the Government of India, implemented by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), a special purpose vehicle constituted under the Ministry of Railways. The project is being executed with technical and financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and adopts the E5 series Shinkansen platform.

The corridor connects Mumbai in Maharashtra with Ahmedabad in Gujarat, with intermediate stations at Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand and Sabarmati. Bilimora is among the smaller intermediate halts on the alignment, serving the Navsari–Gandevi region of southern Gujarat.

Location and design

The station is being constructed close to the existing Bilimora Junction railway station of the Western Railway zone, allowing potential interchange between the conventional broad-gauge network and the high-speed line. Like most stations on the corridor, the Bilimora high-speed station is designed as an elevated structure with the platforms above ground level, while the tracks pass through on a viaduct.

Significance

The station is expected to improve regional connectivity for Navsari district and the surrounding agricultural and industrial belt of south Gujarat, which is known for chikoo cultivation, textile units and small-scale manufacturing. Together with the adjacent Vapi and Surat stations, Bilimora forms part of the cluster of Gujarat halts that account for the majority of stops on the corridor.
