The Bihar University of Health Sciences is a state public university located in Patna, the capital of the Indian state of Bihar. Before the creation of a dedicated health sciences university, medical, dental and nursing colleges in Bihar were affiliated to general state universities, principally Aryabhatta Knowledge University in Patna and other regional universities. With the rapid expansion of medical education in India and the need for a single specialised body to oversee curricula, examinations and academic standards in the health professions, the Government of Bihar moved to consolidate health sciences education under a dedicated university, in line with similar institutions established earlier in other states.
