The station primarily handles electric multiple unit (EMU) local services that connect Sealdah with the northern and north-eastern suburbs of the Kolkata metropolitan area.
The station is situated close to the Ultadanga area and the western edge of the planned township of Bidhannagar (popularly known as Salt Lake City). Its location near the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, the VIP Road and the Ultadanga junction makes it a convenient interchange point for commuters travelling to and from Salt Lake, the Sector V information technology hub and Rajarhat. Bus services and shared transport routes link the station to several parts of Kolkata and the surrounding suburbs.
The station is served almost exclusively by suburban EMU trains operated by Eastern Railway from Sealdah. Long-distance mail and express trains using the Sealdah Main line generally pass through without halting. Typical destinations of local services calling at the station include:
The station has multiple platforms catering to suburban services in both up and down directions, with the Sealdah Main line being fully electrified at 25 kV AC overhead. Standard passenger amenities such as ticket counters, foot overbridges and platform shelters are provided.
As the nearest railway station to a large part of Bidhannagar and Ultadanga, the station handles a heavy volume of daily commuter traffic, particularly office-goers travelling to central Kolkata and to the Salt Lake business districts. It also serves residents of nearby localities such as Phoolbagan, Kankurgachi and Beleghata, and is used by passengers transferring between suburban rail and road-based transport into Salt Lake and Rajarhat.
