Bhuvneshwari Kumari belongs to the erstwhile princely family of Kotah, a state in present-day Rajasthan that acceded to the Indian Union after independence. She was introduced to squash at a time when the sport had a very limited following among women in India, and the competitive infrastructure for women's squash was largely confined to a handful of clubs and cantonment courts in the larger cities.
Through the 1970s and 1980s, Bhuvneshwari Kumari was the leading figure in Indian women's squash. She won the senior Indian National Squash Championship on numerous consecutive occasions, a streak that remained unmatched in Indian squash for decades. Her sustained dominance helped raise the profile of the sport and encouraged its inclusion in national-level multi-sport competitions and club tournaments across the country.
In addition to her national titles, she represented India in international squash events during her playing years, competing against players from countries with much deeper squash traditions, particularly within the Commonwealth circuit.
In recognition of her contribution to Indian sport, Bhuvneshwari Kumari was conferred the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honours, by the Government of India. She is regarded as a trailblazer who established a competitive standard for women's squash in the country and inspired later generations of Indian players.
