The station is situated on the outskirts of Bhiwandi, a city known for its powerloom textile industry and as a major warehousing and logistics hub serving the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Bhiwandi lies between Thane and Kalyan, and the station provides a rail link that connects the city to the broader suburban network without routing through Mumbai's main suburban corridors.
Bhiwandi Road is one of the intermediate stations on the line linking Vasai Road on the Western Railway with Diva Junction on the Central Railway. The route serves as an important bypass connecting the Western and Central main lines, allowing freight and select passenger trains to move between the two corridors without entering the congested Mumbai suburban core. Stations on this line, including Bhiwandi Road, also handle a limited number of daily passenger services in addition to heavy goods traffic.
The station primarily caters to local commuters travelling within the Vasai–Diva belt and to long-distance passenger trains that use the corridor as an alternative routing.
