Bhiwandi is situated in the Konkan coastal plain of western Maharashtra, on the eastern side of the creek system that drains into the Arabian Sea through the Ulhas River. The terrain is generally low-lying, and the city is connected to surrounding urban centres by the Mumbai–Nashik Expressway (NH 160, formerly part of NH 3) and by state highways linking it to Thane, Kalyan and Vasai. The Bhiwandi Road railway station on the Diva–Vasai line connects the city to the suburban rail network of Mumbai.
Bhiwandi has a long history as a settlement in the Konkan region. Under medieval rule it formed part of the territories successively controlled by the Sultanate of Gujarat, the Nizam Shahis, the Mughals, the Marathas and finally the Portuguese and the British in the wider Konkan and Salsette area. During the colonial period it was administered as part of the Thana district of the Bombay Presidency.
After Indian independence, the town developed rapidly as small textile workshops gave way to a dense concentration of powerlooms, drawing migrant labour from across India. Bhiwandi was upgraded from a municipal council to a municipal corporation, the Bhiwandi-Nizampur City Municipal Corporation, bringing surrounding areas under a single civic administration.
Bhiwandi is one of the largest powerloom clusters in India, producing grey cloth and a range of woven fabrics for downstream processing in centres such as Surat, Ichalkaranji and Mumbai. The industry is dominated by small and medium units and employs a large migrant workforce. The city's textile economy has historically been sensitive to changes in electricity tariffs, yarn prices and central government policy on the powerloom sector.
Owing to its location on the fringes of Mumbai and along major highways, Bhiwandi has emerged as a leading warehousing destination in western India. Large logistics parks and distribution centres operated by e-commerce, retail and third-party logistics companies are concentrated in clusters around Bhiwandi, particularly along the Mumbai–Nashik corridor.
Local government is exercised by the Bhiwandi-Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNCMC), which is responsible for water supply, sanitation, roads, town planning and primary health and education services within its limits. The city falls within the Bhiwandi Lok Sabha constituency and includes the Bhiwandi East, Bhiwandi West and Bhiwandi Rural assembly constituencies of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
Bhiwandi has a religiously and linguistically diverse population, with significant Marathi-, Hindi- and Urdu-speaking communities. Migration linked to the powerloom industry has shaped the city's demographic profile, with workers drawn from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and other states living alongside long-settled local communities.
