Bhimavaram is a major commercial town in the Godavari delta, known for aquaculture, rice trade and educational institutions. The junction station lies within the urban area of Bhimavaram and provides access to the surrounding agrarian hinterland of the West Godavari district. The terrain around the station is the flat alluvial plain of the Krishna–Godavari delta.
Bhimavaram Junction lies on the broad-gauge network connecting the Godavari delta with the Howrah–Chennai trunk corridor. Branch lines from the junction link the town with Narsapur on the coast and with Nidadavolu, which is a station on the main Howrah–Chennai route. Through these connections, the station provides services towards Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Tanuku, Palakollu and Narsapur, among other destinations.
As a junction, Bhimavaram functions as an important interchange for passengers from the southern delta towns travelling towards the main line. It supports daily passenger services, express trains and freight movement related to the region's rice, aquaculture and trading economy.
