Bhilai Nagar is one of several stations that serve the Bhilai–Durg urban agglomeration, a major industrial conurbation in central India. The station is situated within the township area associated with the Bhilai Steel Plant and provides access to residential sectors of the city.
Bhilai grew as a planned industrial town following the establishment of the Bhilai Steel Plant in the late 1950s, which was set up under an agreement between the Government of India and the Soviet Union. The expansion of the urban area and the steel plant's freight and passenger requirements contributed to the development of multiple railway facilities in the region, including Bhilai Nagar, Bhilai (BQR) and the larger junction at Durg.
The station lies on the trunk route connecting Howrah and Mumbai via Nagpur and Raipur, one of the busiest corridors of Indian Railways. Nearby stations on the same corridor include Durg Junction to the west and Raipur Junction to the east. The line is electrified and supports both passenger and heavy freight traffic, much of which is linked to the steel and mining industries of Chhattisgarh.
Although smaller in scale than Durg Junction or Raipur Junction, Bhilai Nagar serves as a convenient halt for residents of the Bhilai township and for workers and visitors associated with the Bhilai Steel Plant, a unit of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). It is part of the dense rail network that supports the industrial economy of the Durg–Bhilai–Raipur belt.
