Bhayandar lies on the suburban corridor between Mumbai Churchgate and Virar, and is one of the busier stations in the northern part of the suburban network. The station handles a high volume of daily commuters travelling between the Mira-Bhayandar belt and Mumbai's commercial districts in South Mumbai and Bandra-Kurla. It also serves as a transfer point for road-based services connecting Bhayandar (West) to areas across the Vasai Creek, including jetty links historically used between Bhayandar and Vasai.
The station is located in Bhayandar, the seat of the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation, situated north of the Dahisar Check Naka and immediately south of Naigaon, the latter being across the Vasai Creek bridge. It has multiple platforms serving slow and fast suburban services on both up and down lines, along with through tracks used by long-distance and freight trains on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad route.
The station has east and west exits, with the Bhayandar (West) side connecting towards areas such as Maxus Mall, Uttan and the coastal belt, and the Bhayandar (East) side connecting towards Navghar, Kashimira and the Western Express Highway via the Mira-Bhayandar road network.
Bhayandar is served primarily by EMU local trains of the Mumbai Suburban Railway, including:
A limited number of mail and express trains on the Western Railway main line pass through the station, though most do not halt there.
The station is central to the daily mobility of Mira-Bhayandar, one of the rapidly urbanised satellite areas of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. With significant residential growth in Mira Road, Bhayandar and Uttan since the 1990s, passenger traffic at Bhayandar has increased substantially, prompting infrastructure upgrades including additional platforms, foot overbridges and ticketing facilities.
