Bhawanipatna is situated in the Kalahandi district of southwestern Odisha, a region historically known for its agrarian economy and cultural heritage. The railway station is located within the town and acts as a gateway for passengers travelling to and from the surrounding Kalahandi, Nabarangpur and Nuapada belt.
The station forms part of a branch line linking Lanjigarh Road on the Sambalpur–Titlagarh corridor with Junagarh Road, which itself connects to the Raipur–Vizianagaram main line. Through these junctions, Bhawanipatna is integrated into wider services connecting Odisha with Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and other parts of India.
The opening of rail services to Bhawanipatna was regarded as a long-awaited development for Kalahandi district, which had remained without direct rail access for many decades after independence. The station has since supported regional mobility, trade in agricultural produce, and travel for students, government workers and pilgrims.
