Bharuch Junction is situated on the northern bank of the Narmada River, immediately after the Golden Bridge that carries the railway across the river. It is one of the principal stations between Vadodara and Surat, and serves as a junction for the branch line that historically extended towards Samni and Dahej, an area of considerable industrial activity.
The station forms part of one of the oldest and busiest railway corridors in western India. The Mumbai–Ahmedabad route, on which Bharuch is located, was developed in the 19th century by the Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway (BB&CI). The crossing of the Narmada at Bharuch by the Golden Bridge was a significant feat of colonial-era railway engineering and remains in service for rail traffic.
The station is served by a wide range of express, superfast, and passenger trains, including services such as Shatabdi, Tejas, Vande Bharat, Rajdhani, and several long-distance trains operating between western, northern, and southern India.
Bharuch is one of the oldest port cities of India, and the railway station has been important to the movement of chemicals, fertilisers, textiles, and other industrial goods produced in the Bharuch–Ankleshwar–Dahej industrial corridor. The presence of large industrial estates, including those at Ankleshwar and Dahej, has made the station an important node for both passenger and freight traffic in southern Gujarat.
