Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research, commonly referred to as BIHER, is a deemed university located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It operates as a multi-disciplinary institution offering programmes across engineering and technology, medicine, dental sciences, nursing, management, law, and the basic sciences. The university functions under the regulatory framework of the University Grants Commission of India and is recognised as a deemed-to-be university under Section 3 of the UGC Act. BIHER is among the larger private deemed universities in Tamil Nadu, drawing students from across India as well as international students, particularly from neighbouring countries and the broader South Asian region.
BIHER offers a wide spectrum of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes. Its constituent colleges and schools cover disciplines that span both professional and liberal fields, making it one of the more comprehensive private deemed universities in southern India.
The engineering faculty is among the most prominent divisions of the university. Programmes are offered at the undergraduate level leading to the Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Technology degree, and at the postgraduate level leading to the Master of Engineering or Master of Technology degree. Doctoral research programmes are also available. Disciplines typically include computer science and engineering, electronics and communication engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and information technology, among others.
BIHER houses medical and dental colleges that offer the MBBS and BDS programmes respectively, subject to the regulatory oversight of the National Medical Commission and the Dental Council of India. Nursing and pharmacy programmes are also part of the health sciences cluster. These programmes are structured to meet the national curriculum standards applicable to health profession education in India.
The university offers management education through programmes leading to the Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Business Administration degrees. Legal education is provided through a school of law offering the integrated five-year LLB programme as well as the standalone three-year LLB for graduates.
BIHER encourages research activity across its constituent units. Doctoral programmes leading to the Doctor of Philosophy degree are available in several disciplines. The university maintains research laboratories and encourages faculty and students to publish in peer-reviewed journals and participate in funded research projects supported by national agencies such as the Department of Science and Technology and the All India Council for Technical Education.
The main campus of BIHER is situated in the Selaiyur area of Chennai. The campus accommodates academic blocks, laboratories, libraries, hostels for men and women, sports facilities, and administrative offices. The central library maintains a collection of print and digital resources to support academic and research needs across disciplines. Separate hostel facilities are maintained for students from outside Chennai and for international students. The campus is connected to the city's public transport network, and the proximity to Chennai's urban infrastructure provides students access to the broader educational and professional ecosystem of the city.
Admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes are conducted in accordance with guidelines issued by the All India Council for Technical Education and the Tamil Nadu government, with seats allocated through centralised counselling processes as well as management quota admissions. Medical admissions follow the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) framework mandated by the National Medical Commission. Management programme admissions consider performance in national entrance examinations such as CAT, MAT, or equivalent tests. International students are admitted through a separate process coordinated by the university's international admissions office.
Student life at BIHER is shaped by a combination of academic commitments and extracurricular engagement. The university supports student associations, technical clubs, cultural committees, and sports teams. Annual technical and cultural festivals provide platforms for students to demonstrate skills beyond the classroom. The National Service Scheme and National Cadet Corps units on campus offer students opportunities for community engagement and discipline-oriented activities. Sports infrastructure supports both indoor and outdoor games, and students participate in inter-university competitions organised under the Association of Indian Universities.
