BHEL manufactures a wide range of products including thermal, hydro, gas, and nuclear power plant equipment, boilers, turbines, generators, transformers, switchgear, locomotives, and industrial systems. It operates an integrated business covering design, engineering, manufacturing, construction, testing, commissioning, and after-sales service. A significant share of the installed power generation capacity in India is based on equipment supplied by BHEL.
BHEL traces its origins to the establishment of Heavy Electricals (India) Limited at Bhopal in the 1950s, set up to develop indigenous capability in heavy electrical equipment. In 1964, BHEL was incorporated as a separate entity, and in 1974 Heavy Electricals (India) Limited was merged with BHEL to form a single integrated company. The expansion was part of India's broader programme of industrial self-reliance during the early Five Year Plans, with technical collaboration drawn initially from international partners.
BHEL operates manufacturing units, regional offices, power sector regional centres, and service centres across India. Its principal manufacturing locations include:
BHEL has been recognised as a Maharatna and earlier Navratna company by the Government of India for its scale of operations and operational autonomy. It is regularly featured in lists of large Indian public sector enterprises and has received industry awards in engineering, exports, and human resources.
BHEL has played a central role in India's industrial and electrification programmes. Equipment supplied by the company supports a large portion of utility-scale power generation in India, and it has exported equipment and services to several countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The company also contributes to indigenous capability in supercritical boiler technology, hydro turbines, and railway traction systems.
