Bhanu Athaiya (1929–2020) was an Indian costume designer and painter, widely regarded as one of the foremost costume designers of Hindi cinema. She is best known internationally for becoming the first Indian to win an Academy Award, which she received for her costume design work on the film Gandhi (1982).

Bhanu Athaiya began her creative career as a painter before transitioning into costume design for Indian cinema. Her training in the visual arts informed her approach to period detail, fabric, and silhouette, which became hallmarks of her later film work.
Over several decades, Athaiya designed costumes for a large number of Hindi films, working with leading directors and producers of the Indian film industry. Her designs spanned a wide range of periods and genres, from contemporary urban dramas to historical and epic productions.
Athaiya served as a costume designer on Richard Attenborough's biographical film Gandhi. For her work on the film, she shared the Academy Award for Best Costume Design at the 55th Academy Awards ceremony, becoming the first Indian to win an Oscar.
Athaiya's recognition at the Academy Awards marked a milestone for Indian participation in international cinema. Within India, she is remembered for shaping the visual identity of numerous landmark Hindi films and for elevating the role of costume design as a serious craft within the Indian film industry.
In her later years, Athaiya documented her experiences and artistic process in writings on Indian cinema costume. She passed away in 2020.
