Club career

Early career in India

Bhutia began his senior club career with East Bengal in Kolkata in the early 1990s. He subsequently moved to JCT Mills in Phagwara, Punjab, where he was part of the squad that won the inaugural National Football League title in the 1996–97 season. He returned to East Bengal and also had a spell with Mohun Bagan, the two leading clubs of Kolkata, becoming one of the few players to feature for both giants of Indian football.

Bury FC

In 1999, Bhutia signed for Bury, an English club then playing in the second tier of English football. He became the first Indian footballer to sign a contract with a European club in the modern era and one of the few Asian players in English football at the time. He spent three seasons at Bury before returning to India.

Later club career

After his return, Bhutia continued to play for East Bengal and Mohun Bagan in the National Football League and later the I-League. He had a brief loan stint with Perak FA in Malaysia in 2003. He was a key figure for East Bengal during the club's success in the ASEAN Club Championship in 2003. He continued playing competitive club football until his retirement in 2015, with his final stint being at United Sikkim FC, which he co-owned.

International career

Bhutia made his senior international debut for India in 1995 at the age of 19. He went on to captain the national side for an extended period and is among the most-capped players in Indian football history, having earned over 100 international caps. He led India to several titles, including the SAFF Championship and the Nehru Cup. Under his captaincy, India also won the AFC Challenge Cup in 2008, which qualified the country for the AFC Asian Cup 2011 — its first appearance in the continental tournament in 27 years.
