The station is situated within Bhadrak town, on the alignment connecting Kharagpur in West Bengal with Bhubaneswar and points further south. It serves as the rail gateway for Bhadrak district and adjoining areas of northern Odisha, including parts of the Baleshwar and Jajpur regions, and is among the busier intermediate stations between Kharagpur and Bhubaneswar.
Rail connectivity through Bhadrak dates to the construction of the coastal trunk line linking Calcutta (Kolkata) with Madras (Chennai), commissioned in stages by the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The section through Odisha became part of the Bengal Nagpur Railway and later passed through successive zonal reorganisations of Indian Railways. With the creation of the East Coast Railway zone in 2003, headquartered at Bhubaneswar, the station came under its administrative control through the Khurda Road division.
Bhadrak is served by a wide range of trains running on the Howrah–Chennai corridor, including superfast and express services connecting Odisha with Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Bhubaneswar, Puri and other major destinations. A number of regional passenger and MEMU services also originate from or terminate at Bhadrak, providing short-distance connectivity within Odisha and to neighbouring West Bengal.
As the principal railway station for Bhadrak district, the station plays an important role in regional mobility, trade and access to administrative and educational centres elsewhere in Odisha. Its position on a high-density trunk route also makes it a significant operational point for crew changes, technical halts and freight movement along the east coast.
