Bettiah has historical importance as the seat of the erstwhile Bettiah Raj and as a centre of the Champaran Satyagraha of 1917 led by Mahatma Gandhi. The railway line through the town was developed during the colonial period as part of the metre-gauge network in north Bihar, which was later converted to broad gauge as part of the Indian Railways' Project Unigauge.
The station handles passenger and express trains operating between stations in north Bihar and other parts of the country. Through trains from Bettiah connect with destinations including Patna, New Delhi, Kolkata, Lucknow and Mumbai, in addition to local services along the Narkatiaganj–Muzaffarpur corridor.
As the railway gateway to Bettiah and the wider West Champaran district, the station supports daily commuter movement, pilgrimage and tourist travel to sites associated with the Champaran Satyagraha, and goods movement linked to the agricultural economy of the region, which is known for sugarcane cultivation and sugar mills.
