The Purple Line is one of the two principal corridors of Namma Metro, running broadly in an east–west direction across Bengaluru. The eastern extension of the line, of which Benniganahalli is part, was built to connect the city centre with Whitefield, a major residential and information technology hub. The corridor was implemented by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Karnataka.
Benniganahalli is situated close to the K. R. Puram area, which is an important node for road and suburban rail transport in eastern Bengaluru. The station is intended to serve commuters travelling between residential areas in the east of the city and employment centres along the Purple Line, including Majestic, Indiranagar and Whitefield.
As part of the Purple Line's eastern reach, Benniganahalli station contributes to reducing road congestion along the Old Madras Road corridor, one of Bengaluru's busiest arterial roads. It also strengthens public transport access for commuters travelling to and from the IT clusters in the eastern part of the city.
