Bennett University was founded by Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd., the parent company of The Times Group, one of India's largest media conglomerates. The institution takes its name from the historical lineage of the publishing house, whose roots trace back to the founding partners of The Times of India. The university was established as a state private university under a legislative act of the Government of Uttar Pradesh.
The university operates several schools covering engineering, management, law, media, and liberal arts. Programmes offered include undergraduate degrees such as B.Tech, BBA, BA (Liberal Arts), B.Com, BA (Mass Communication), and integrated BA LLB and BBA LLB courses, along with postgraduate degrees in management, technology, and law, and doctoral programmes (PhD).
The campus is situated in the Greater Noida region of the National Capital Region (NCR), within proximity to other educational and industrial institutions in Gautam Buddha Nagar district. The campus includes academic blocks, residential hostels, libraries, laboratories, and sports facilities.
Owing to its association with The Times Group, the university has positioned itself with a focus on industry-oriented education, particularly in the fields of media, communication, and management. The Times School of Media draws on the editorial and journalistic resources of the parent group.
Bennett University is one of several private universities to have been established in Uttar Pradesh during the 2010s, a period marked by an expansion of private higher education in the state. Its founding by a major Indian media house places it within a small group of universities in India promoted by media organisations.
