Background

The Kolkata Metro was the first metro rail system to begin operations in India. The Blue Line runs broadly along a north–south alignment, connecting Dakshineswar in the north with Kavi Subhash (New Garia) in the south. Belgachia lies along the northern segment of this corridor, between Shyambazar to the south and Dum Dum to the north.

History

The northern stretch of the Kolkata Metro between Dum Dum and Belgachia was among the early sections to be commissioned. Belgachia opened to the public during the phased commissioning of the line in the 1980s, when services were progressively extended along the original Dum Dum–Tollygunge corridor. The station was subsequently integrated into the through service of the Blue Line as further extensions, including the link across the Hooghly to Dakshineswar, were added.

Layout and facilities

Belgachia is built as an underground station with a concourse level above the platform level. The station has standard metro amenities including ticket counters, automatic fare collection gates, and provisions for elevators and escalators. Trains operate in both directions, towards Dakshineswar in the north and towards Kavi Subhash in the south.

Connectivity

The station is located near major north Kolkata landmarks including the R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Belgachia veterinary establishments, and Indian Statistical Institute (located further north). Bus services along APC Road and connecting feeder routes provide last-mile access.

Significance

As part of the Kolkata Metro Blue Line, Belgachia contributes to a high-capacity corridor that has been central to easing road congestion in Kolkata. The station serves a densely populated catchment in north Kolkata and links residents to commercial hubs at Esplanade, Park Street and Tollygunge as well as to the suburban rail interchange at Dum Dum.
